It is said that Santa Claus is an adaptation of the Sinterklass. On 5th December Sinterklass comes to Netherlands (Belgium 6th December) with his helpers called Zwarte Piet. Parents of young kids invite Sinterklass to their house to teach good qualities to kids.It is also the time when kids get gifts from parents (just like Christmas).
